Who
Else Wants To Get
Out of Recovery
And Start Living Their Dreams?
And ... All within 90 Days?
Are you ready to get out of recovery and into living life
again?
Ready to take your dreams off the shelf and start pursuing
them?
I’m here to tell you that it’s
completely possible to permanently overcome your addiction,
never relapse again ... and live a life of fulfilling your
dreams!
I know, you’ve tried and tried to quit
... and keep relapsing. So what’s going to be different
about my approach? And how can I promise that you can turn
your life around in 90 days?
Hi, I’m Kathy Williamson, the
Addictions Coach. I can identify with your struggles because
I’ve been there myself.
I’m not a psychologist or a doctor. I’m
just a regular person who struggled for ten long years to
get out of my addiction. So I know the ups and downs, losing
close relationships, the internal search for why I was doing
my addiction, the constant changing of support groups in
order to hopefully find a solution, and the shame and
self-hatred for not being able to stop my addiction.
What got me out of my addiction was a
way completely different than what's being taught today. But
I'll get to that in a moment.
Through my approach I can identify and
deal with some of the “stinking thinking” as I call it. The
lies we tell ourselves. The excuses we use. The lies we tell
others. The things we do to hide our addiction. The
self-pity parties (oh, I was so good at this one!). The
dreams we throw away. The struggle of forgetting our hurt
after we’ve forgiven someone.
You know, I found that relapse provides
keys to understanding the underlying causes of addictions.
The emotions you go through at the time of your temptation
should be looked at very deeply. Temptations all start
within the head – the stinking thinking between your ears.
Sometimes the things we tell ourselves are true, and
sometimes they’re not. But whatever the reason, we end up
relapsing and going downhill again.
But the treatment that society offers
for addicts doesn’t touch the real causes. Society has
changed its theories over the years. It used to be that
alcoholism, and drug use, was considered a “sin” according
to the Bible. However, insurance companies weren’t getting
people to come in for help. So I notice in the early 1980's
that they started telling the addict that “it’s not your
fault” in an effort to get them to reach out for counseling
or in-patient treatment. They still didn’t get the response
they wanted, so they emphasized that alcoholism was a
disease, that you can’t control it, so there’s no shame in
having it. This theory eventually spread to other addictions
and almost any problem out there – drug abuse, sexual
addiction, overeating, ADHD, shoplifting, etc.
The treatment they offer is counseling
and being connected to other addicts on a weekly basis
through support groups, and learning how to cope with your
addiction for the rest of your life. After all, since it’s a
disease, there is no cure for it.
However, this disease model leaves a
person hopeless and with no motivation to really find out
what’s causing the addiction. I see it as the blind leading
the blind. And I'm here to help you open your eyes and take
charge of your life!
Sure, there are moments of having
anxieties that trigger using drugs or alcohol. There are
memories that one tries to escape because they’re too
painful to deal with. And, there’s also the fact that the
drugs or alcohol do produce good feelings, although it’s
only short-term. There’s the loneliness, the emptiness, the
lack of purpose, the lack of love, the “poor me” mentality,
the victim role, the “I am what I am, I’ll never change”
attitude.
And speaking of attitudes, how low can
you get before you finally realize that your attitude is
your choice? Other people don’t make you do your addiction
or others don’t make you feel sorry for yourself, or feel
worthless, or make you feel so ashamed that you have to
escape through your addiction.
You may be stuck in your addiction for
a number of years now. The longer you do it, the more stuck
you think you are. You’ve given up on ever getting free of
the addiction (because no one has offered you any
alternative to the disease model). You’ve given up on having
healthy, loving relationships. You’ve given up on restoring
broken relationships – especially with a spouse or family
members. Perhaps you’ve even given up on having a regular
job – or even a career you were once excited about. You’ve
given up on yourself and you don’t care. Period.
If you continue on the same path you’re
on, I can almost guarantee you that you’ll stay stuck in
your addiction and the relapse cycle. Why? Because you’re
not being told what the true underlying causes are and shown
how to get yourself out of your addiction.
Are You Lacking Will Power – Or
Something Else?
It’s not a matter of “will power.” Most
addicts think of needing the will power to stop doing their
addiction, which is true to a certain extent. But the real
thing you need to look at is finding the right “motivation”
for a bright future which will pull you out of your
addiction and into living the life of your dreams.
In fact, you’re being told that you’ll
never permanently overcome your addiction because it’s a
disease. Now, I’m not a medical doctor, but I’ve noticed
that even the psychology and medical professions are having
difficulty coming to agreement on what causes addictions.
While they’re still fighting among themselves, you’re stuck
in the middle, and you are told only their side – that it’s
a disease.
Earlier I mentioned that addictions are
really a “sin” according to the Bible. Now, if you don’t
want to hear anything about religion, that’s fine. These
principles that I’ll show you still work, whether or not you
want to believe in God. While there are advantages to
believing in God, that’s not my point right here.
Right now I just want to open your eyes
to a different viewpoint on what causes addictions and how
to get out of them.
But first, let me tell you my story
...
Back in 1979 after spending almost six
months in the hospital with a medical condition, I became
addicted to prescription pain medicine. At that time I
finally admitted to myself that I was addicted and knew I
couldn’t lick the problem myself. I had also been around a
Christian lady who was so vibrant with life - she said it
was because she had Jesus in her life. So I asked Jesus
Christ to come into my life ... I wanted out of my addiction
and to grab what I saw in that lady.
I wish I could say things got better,
but they didn’t. In fact, they got worse! Even though I got
thoroughly grounded in understanding the Bible, it didn’t
help me with my addiction or deep depression.
About five years later I started
attending support groups. Although these were Christian
support groups, they still went off of the same theories of
the typical 12-Step AA model. I got frustrated because I’d
do the steps and then say, “okay, what’s next?” because I
was still stuck. I finally gave up.
Then after 10 long years of struggling
with my addiction, things suddenly changed. Let me back up a
little first. About a year after I became a Christian I
needed to find a place to “give” of myself to help others.
So I got training at a Christian-based crisis hotline to be
a non-professional counselor on the crisis phones. I had
found my passion! I loved it! Within 3-4 months I had come
out of my deep depression, but not my addiction. Then as
time moved along, the excitement wore off.
But in 1984 I knew the Lord had called
me to open my own crisis hotline. I just didn’t know where
or when. It wasn’t until the first part of 1990 that the
doors opened for me to do this. Within four months my whole
life turned around and I’ve never gone back! I no longer had
a need for my addiction. I no longer had pity parties. I
could no longer get myself to start crying because I felt so
bad about myself.
In fact, I remember driving down the
road thinking, this is the best “high” anyone could have!
No drug could provide this high – and it lasts! I've been
completely free of my addiction and depression for at least
20 years!
In 1995 I had to close the doors to the
crisis hotline, so I moved back to California and got
involved in the previous hotline I counseled at. With this
newfound knowledge, I spoke to people in crisis about taking
their dreams off the shelf, dusting them off, and start
working on them. I encouraged them that, as a byproduct of
doing this, their problems (including addictions) would go
away.
It was amazing to see how this approach
set many people free from the problems they were stuck in.
In recent years I’ve been able to teach
this approach to people staying at rescue missions. I was
able to confirm that when they relapsed, it was because when
the excitement wore off from getting a steady job, getting
an apartment, that they didn’t have any reason not to mess
up their lives. They didn’t have an awesome future to look
forward to! And they ended up doing their addiction again.
Discovering your passion in life and
using it in a life-long vision to reach out to love and
serve others provides the powerful motivation to pull you
out of your addiction and into living the life of your
dreams.
You see, there’s a mindshift that needs
to take place. Instead of being motivated not to do your
addiction because you don’t want to go back to the horrible
lifestyle you had as an addict ... you need the motivation
of not wanting to do your addiction because you don’t want
to mess up the awesome future ahead of you. Do you see the
difference?
Getting Started On The Right
Tract
So how do you do this and how do you
get started?
I’ve written a book Out of
Recovery & Into Living Your Dreams! which goes into
detail on the various things you need to deal with in order
to quit your relapse and get on with your life. Here’s the
Table of
Contents for you to check out.
The neat thing is that it also contains
a 12 week workbook to walk you through the process. I
show you what you need to be working on each week. It helps
you figure out some things you’ve not looked at before –
like what your passion is, some of the stinking thinking
going on inside your head ... remember, I've been where you
are so I know what's going on in your head. You'll also
learn how to forgive others, how to discover your “love
language” and more.
And because I've walked this road, I
can identify what's going on between your ears and help you
see it too ... and replace it with proper thinking and
believing.
Yes, the book is written from a
Christian perspective and does contain Scriptures. Again, if
you’re not interested in that aspect, then skip over it and
pull out the general information on the principles that you
can apply to your life.
However, the advantage to being a
Christian is that you can develop a personal relationship
with Jesus Christ and God. This is important, because
only God loves you unconditionally. And if you’ve lost
relationships because of your addiction, God still loves you
and He will NEVER leave you.
In fact, when I became a Christian this
was the one truth that I held on to – that God would never
leave me. Those of us who have been rejected a lot, this is
such an awesome thing to know.
As Christians we also learn how to
receive God’s unconditional love, and how to properly love
others. Now that’s something that’s rarely taught. And when
you see how God loves you and others, you can learn the
skills of developing healthy, loving relationships that
last.
Another advantage of being a Christian
is that you’ll get to uncover your true mission in life.
What did God create you to do? Usually it’s whatever you’re
passionate about. You see, we’re made in the image of God
and God is a God of passion. I’m not talking about sexual
passion. I’m talking about whatever you’re passionate about.
It could be fixing cars or sewing, changing your community,
or changing the world!
So in working through this workbook
you’ll come up with an understanding of what your passion is
in life. You'll start to develop a vision for your future
and the steps needed to accomplish it.
